Diet for IVF: nutrition before and during the protocol

A good diet plays an important role at all stages of in vitro fertilization (IVF). It helps the woman's body prepare for conception, maintains hormonal balance, and increases the chances of successful embryo implantation. In this article, we will examine dietary recommendations before starting an IVF program, during stimulation, and depending on the type of protocol.

Diet before starting an IVF program

The diet before starting an IVF program should aim to accumulate the necessary vitamins and trace elements. The future mother's body must be saturated with nutrients that contribute to the normal functioning of the reproductive system and the development of a healthy fetus.

It is recommended to include foods rich in:

  • folic acid (spinach, broccoli, legumes);
  • iodine (seafood, seaweed);
  • vitamin D (eggs, fatty fish, sunbathing);
  • potassium (bananas, avocados);
  • vitamin E (nuts, vegetable oils);
  • calcium (dairy products, broccoli);
  • vitamin B (whole grains, liver, eggs).

Diet during ovulation stimulation and embryo transfer

During infertility treatment through IVF, women are advised to adjust their diet considering hormonal load and the body's needs:

  • Weight loss diets are not recommended during this period. If weight loss is necessary, it should be done before starting the protocol.
  • The basis of the diet should consist of protein-rich foods, which reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation and promote cell development. Preference should be given to chicken, turkey, lean fish, eggs, and cottage cheese.
  • Animal-based proteins should represent at least 60 to 70% of the total protein intake.

To maintain stable glucose levels and prevent metabolic disorders, it is advisable to limit the consumption of easily digestible carbohydrates:

  • sweets;
  • muffins;
  • sweet fruits (grapes, bananas, dates).

Moderate amounts of complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables) are allowed.

Fats are also important:

  • The necessary amount is 20 g per day;
  • The main sources are vegetable oils and fatty fish.

It is important to limit

  • salty foods (to avoid water retention);
  • caffeinated beverages (tea, coffee, energy drinks).

It is necessary to observe a drinking regime - at least 30 ml of water per 1 kg of body weight.

Fiber should always be present in the diet: fresh fruits and vegetables help normalize digestion, especially after puncture and during recovery.

Diet depending on the type of IVF protocol

Dietary recommendations may vary depending on the reproductive technique used:

Classic IVF (with own eggs)

The diet should aim to stimulate the ovaries. Priority should be given to protein foods, foods containing antioxidants (berries, herbs), and a sufficient amount of fats.

IVF with donor eggs

The main task is to prepare the endometrium for implantation. Recommended products to improve hormonal context and vascular health include green vegetables, nuts, avocados, and fatty fish.

IVF with double donation

The goal here is to create the most favorable environment for conception and gestation. The diet should include

  • B vitamins;
  • magnesium;
  • vitamins E and D;
  • sufficient liquids.

Individual approach and advice

Each patient is different, so it is important to develop a diet tailored to the individual. It is recommended to consult a reproductive specialist and/or a nutritionist to create a personalized diet to increase the chances of success.
