The basal temperature is an important indicator of women's health, which not only helps determine the day of ovulation but also detects the onset of pregnancy. Many women track their basal temperature to choose the optimal time for conception.

What is basal temperature?

Basal temperature is the body's temperature at complete rest. It is measured in the morning, immediately after waking up, without getting out of bed. To obtain accurate data, it is important to use the same thermometer throughout the measurement period.

There are three main methods for measuring basal temperature:

• The oral method - convenient but less accurate, as external factors, such as breathing, can influence the results.
• The vaginal method - provides more accurate results but may cause discomfort.
• Rectal - considered the most reliable, as it gives stable results, but requires hygiene measures. This method is the most commonly used.

Changes in basal temperature during the cycle

During the menstrual cycle, basal temperature undergoes natural changes:

• First phase (before ovulation): the temperature remains between 36.4-36.7°C.
• Ovulation: it rises to 37-37.2°C and stays at this level for 12-16 days.
• On the eve of menstruation: the temperature drops to 36.4-36.7°C.

It is important to remember that these data are averages. Basal temperature can be influenced by individual bodily characteristics such as hormonal context, stress level, sleep quality, and diet. To obtain reliable results, it is necessary to measure for at least three menstrual cycles and discuss the calendar with your gynecologist.

Basal temperature during pregnancy

At the beginning of pregnancy, basal temperature remains high and is maintained between 37 and 37.2°C. This is due to the action of the hormone progesterone, which is first produced by the corpus luteum and, starting from the 16th week of pregnancy, by the placenta.

The evolution of basal temperature varies depending on the mode of conception:

• In the case of natural conception, the temperature rises after ovulation and remains high when fertilization is successful.
• In the case of in vitro fertilization (IVF), basal temperature may remain consistently high due to hormonal support, even if the natural cycle experienced fluctuations.

However, an increase in basal temperature is not always a sign of pregnancy. It can be caused by pelvic inflammatory processes, colds, or even alcohol consumption.
