Vitamins and trace elements to improve male fertility

Why is it important to ensure sperm quality?

Good results on the fertility test are the cornerstone of male fertility. When a man's sperm count, shape, and motility are normal, the chances of conceiving a child increase significantly. However, in the modern world, with its stress, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep and nutrients, deterioration of sperm quality has become quite common. Besides obvious factors like bad habits or poor diet, the overall state of the environment, including air pollution from heavy metals and pesticides, also has a negative impact.

Fortunately, male fertility is not a fixed value. It is a parameter that can be influenced, especially with the help of nutrients. Some vitamins, minerals, and other active substances are capable not only of increasing sperm count but also of significantly improving their morphological characteristics, genetic stability, and fertilization capacity. However, their combination is not the only important factor; their bioavailability, the regularity of their intake, and overall health also play a crucial role.

Key Nutrients Influencing Sperm Quality

Among all the trace elements necessary for male reproductive health, zinc holds a special place. It not only regulates testosterone production but also participates in the cell division process, which is essential for normal sperm formation. Additionally, zinc has an antioxidant function, reducing oxidative stress levels. A deficiency can lead to decreased libido and even hormonal imbalance. Oysters, seeds, nuts, and beef are excellent sources of zinc. For optimal absorption, it is important to consume proteins, vitamin B6, and to limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

Selenium also plays an important role in reproductive function. It protects sperm DNA, influences their shape, and increases their activity. It is particularly useful for men living in regions where the soil is poor in selenium. Brazil nuts, tuna, and liver are the main sources of this element. Intake should be strictly dosed, as excess selenium can be toxic.

Vitamin E protects body cells against oxidative stress and increases sperm motility. Its action is enhanced when combined with vitamin C. To be optimally absorbed, vitamin E should be consumed with beneficial fats. Vegetable oils, nuts, and avocados are good sources.

Vitamin C helps reduce the number of sperm with morphological abnormalities, prevents their agglutination, and increases their motility. It is recommended for smokers and residents of environmentally disadvantaged areas. Citrus fruits, berries, kiwis, and broccoli are rich in vitamin C.

Folic acid (B9) is necessary for the formation of complete genetic material. A deficiency can cause chromosomal anomalies in sperm. The best form is the active form (L-Methylfolate). It should be combined with vitamin B12. Sources include green vegetables, liver, legumes, and eggs.

L-carnitine is essential for energy production in sperm. It helps transport fatty acids to the mitochondria, which are responsible for energy production and can trigger apoptosis if necessary. Its action is reinforced when combined with B vitamins and coenzyme Q10. Main sources are meat, poultry, and dairy products.

Coenzyme Q10 participates in ATP production and directly influences sperm motility. It increases the chances of conception. Coenzyme Q10 is especially effective when taken with vitamin E, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. It is found in fish, liver, broccoli, and nuts.

Factors Affecting the Absorption of Vitamins and Minerals

Even with well-chosen dietary supplements, it is important to consider the conditions of their absorption. Bioavailability depends on the chemical form of the substance: zinc citrate is more effective than zinc oxide. Gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, pancreatitis, biliary stasis) can reduce nutrient absorption efficiency.

Some substances enhance or, conversely, weaken each other's action. Calcium reduces zinc absorption, and vitamin C enhances iron absorption. Poor habits, such as smoking and alcohol, not only destroy vitamins but also block their action. Chronic stress increases the need for B vitamins and antioxidants.

When to see a doctor?

Men contemplating fatherhood are advised to check their reproductive health beforehand. If pregnancy does not occur after 12 months of regular unprotected sex, a medical examination is necessary. An urologist or andrologist can prescribe a spermogram, hormonal and biochemical analyses, scrotal ultrasound, and determine vitamin and trace element deficiencies.

IVF with donor sperm and double donation

If, after taking nutrients and changing lifestyle, sperm quality does not improve (for example in cases of azoospermia, severe asthenospermia, high DNA fragmentation), IVF with donor sperm may be recommended. This technique is suitable in cases of complete absence of sperm or in cases of serious hereditary diseases. Donor material undergoes strict selection and multiple testing stages.

In cases where neither partner can provide their own gametes, IVF with double donation is used, which involves using donor eggs and sperm simultaneously. This method allows many couples to achieve their dream of becoming parents, even in cases of severe infertility.

Modern reproductive medicine offers reliable and ethical solutions. Consulting with an andrologist or reproductive specialist will help you choose the most suitable approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much zinc should be consumed? 11 to 15 mg per day, up to 30 mg for conception projects, with a maximum of 40 mg.
  • What amount of selenium is safe? 55 to 100 µg, up to 200 µg under medical supervision.
  • Vitamin E: 200 to 400 IU per day, preferably with fats.
  • Vitamin C: 500 to 1000 mg per day, compatible with vitamin E.
  • Folic acid (B9): 400 to 800 µg in active form + vitamin B12.
  • L-carnitine: 1,000 to 2,000 mg, treatment duration of 1 to 3 months.
  • Coenzyme Q10: 200 to 400 mg, in ubiquinol form, with fats.
  • When to expect results? After 2 to 3 months, as this is the duration of the spermatogenesis cycle.

Complex preparations containing zinc, selenium, vitamins C, E, B9, B12, L-carnitine, and coenzyme Q10 are suitable for general support. In case of deficiency, it is best to take nutrients individually.

A holistic approach to men's health

Male fertility is a sensitive indicator of overall health. It is possible to maintain sperm quality through a balanced diet, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, and stress reduction. Nutrients play an important role, but they are only fully effective when combined with a healthy lifestyle. Before starting supplements, consulting a doctor is important, especially if abnormalities are detected in the spermogram. A responsible approach and competent medical support significantly increase the chances of conceiving a child.
